“I found the TSR training thought provoking and although the training dealt with such a difficult subject matter, it was delivered in a sensitive and supportive way by the trainers. I would recommend this course to anyone who wishes to gain a further insight into trauma and how the impact of this can manifest for trauma survivors.”

Trauma Stress Reaction (TSR)

Trauma Stress Reaction - MHFA England

In April 2009, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England commissioned Bernie Graham and Caroline Hounsell from Phoenix Philosophy to develop the Trauma Stress Reaction (TSR) course in response to the growing concern for the increasing number of people affected by post traumatic stress conditions.

Ranging from deeply affected victims of abuse as children, to psychologically scarred servicemen and women returning from deployment in conflict zones, we felt it was imperative to raise public awareness of the experiences and support needs of these often unrecognised members of our communities.

This training is intended for anyone who lives, works with, or has a developing interest in TSR or more specifically, Acute Stress Disorder or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The programme forms an integral part of Phoenix Philosophy and Mental Health First Aid England’s public health training portfolio and is designed for both non-specialist and informed audiences providing a thorough introduction to the subject area.

The primary learning objectives of the one day TSR Course are to:

We must express particular gratitude to Dr Pamela Swales and the team at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, National Centre for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, California, for warmly welcoming Bernie Graham and Caroline Hounsell onto their Clinical Programme. Their participation on the programme was the genesis for the TSR course.

We also wish to convey our profound thanks to Sarah Kelly and Dawn Kober and the National Association for People Abused as Children (NAPAC) for their most generous collaboration in the development of the training.
